After many years of use in the US, the name Chrysler Royal was introduced into Australia in 1957 with the designation AP1 for Australian Plymouth. Offered in either a four door sedan Royal, four door wagon Plainsman and a two door coupe utility Wayfarer, the models were an instant success. The V8 powered Royals were a popular choice of the South Australian Police with their Highway Patrol of the time, while most customers bought the car with either the 230 cu manual or the 250 cu Powerflite 2-speed automatic. This model depicts the 1958 colour scheme with one overall colour and a separate matching colour for the side flash and roof.

Introduced as the "Forward Look" models in February 1957, the unique Australian manufactured Chrysler Royal was a clever rework of the 1953 US designed Plymouth.  Chrysler Australia engineers heavily modified the front and rear panels of the Plymouth to create the API (Australian Production 1) in an effort to compete with the sales success of Ford's Customline.

The Royal API offered a choice of 3 engines: 230 and 250 cubic inch 6 cylinders, with a 313 cubic inch V8 sourced from Canada.  The AP1 was ahead of its time, offering advanced features such as tinted windows, power steering, power brakes, radio and heater demisters.  Prices started at a competitive 1,896 pounds.
