Been a long time since we heard from ol’ Pork Chop. Times was hard, economy was near left for dead in Pine Sap. ‘Bout near shut down the factory, work was scarce. Some folks left for the city, others stayed. Boys enlisted to serve, some come back pretty banged up. Even PC done near closed doors and quit building those monster hot rods that got him in all kinds of trouble and made him a legend in these parts…

Whatchu might not know is that after all the mischief PC done stirred up, tryin’ to keep food on the table any ol’ way he knew how, the law finally caught up with him and all his moonshinin’ shenanigans……and in order to preserve his family and not get the rest of his kin in trouble, ‘ol PC done plea-bargained with the judge, and ended up in the local jailhouse ‘til the county could figger out what to do with him.

Time went by, seasons come and went, and Pork didn’t like one bit being locked up in that dirty ol’ hoosegow, even though it was bound to happen with all his a runnin’ shine and hot-roddin’ all over the county….. be like a caged animal, PC was, and mad as a mule chewin’ on bumblebees that they done caught him. Yep, and those jailers weren’t none the more sympathetic with Pork, he done caused them too much dang trouble, done near killed ‘em in those car chases thru the countryside trackin’ down those ‘shine stills. All ‘cept for one young deputy workin’ the dog-watch shift at the jailhouse, he done took alikin’ to ‘ol Pork……give him an extra blanket at night when the cold air come down those Georgia mountains. Deputy only been workin’ a spell, done knew PC was famous in these parts, but that young ‘un wasn’t none too smart neither….. I’d say he was just about two bricks shy of a full load.

So on one par-ticular night, that young jailer never suspected what was about to happen. It was a ‘specially cold and quiet night and PC was curled up a shiverin’; deputy was in the dirty ol’ office, slouchin’ in his chair, feet crossed on a mess a’papers on the desk with his Stetson tipped down over his eyes, snorin’ and a catchin’ 40 winks. All of a sudden, without no warning, down yonder in the holler PC heard a buncha hound dogs a barkin’. Funny time to be huntin’ for squirrels or varmits in the midde of the night, he done thought. Then, a ruckus like he didn’t hear for a coons age, a growlin’ sound so heinous, ol’ PC jumped off his cot and up to the iron bars of his cell window. What happened next was right outta the legend of PC….

Two yella headlights acomin’ down the road straight for the jailhouse. PC’s heart started a-poundin’, and afore you knew it, the moonlight done lit up one of the most fearsome machines PC ever seen rollin’ down a county road of Pine Sap. Here come a stripped down fire breathin’ satin black ’33 coupe a burnin’up the blacktop. “Well hell-fire!”, exclaimed PC in a whisper, “wouldya look at that!”. He looked over his shoulder and the deputy was still a snorin’ at the desk. Afore ya knew it, the driver skidded that big ol’ ’33 up aside the jailhouse wall and outside PC’s window. The driver’s door flung open and a figure jumped out and come around the back of the car with a big ‘ol pile of clangin’ chain link. In the moonlight, PC done look with eyes wide as saucers, and a familiar gravelly voice done snort out, “PC, we done come to bust you out!”. PC started a a shiftin’and a grinnin’, nervous as a long tail cat in a room full of rockin’ chairs cuz he done knew what was about to happen. Well, the next few seconds was nuthin’ but a blur: that feller quick like wrapped the chain up under the back of the ’33, then sprung up face-to-face lookin’ at PC through the jail window bars. “Stand back a spell, PC!” and suddenly the figure wrapped the chains up around the window bars like a swamper threadin’ a wire thru a catfish. “Git ready now PC!” he exclaimed as he jumped back in the business seat of the coupe, jammed it into first gear, and mashed the big pedal on the right. Dirt and mud was a flyin’ all up against the wall of the jailhouse as the ornery monster coupe launched forward, slidin’ left n’ right, wakin’ up the deputy who fell back offa his chair. Groggy and on all fours, the deputy looked around for his radio to call for backup. Dang if those jailhouse bars done tore out first from the top side, then the bottom, cinder blocks abreakin’ apart like a cave-in down a mineshaft. Suddenly the bars busted clean off, clangin’ as they hit the ground, and PC jumped from behind the stuffed mattress and scrambled out the gaping hole in the wall. The passenger door flung open as PC reached the fire-breathin’ freedom machine, and as he jumped in PC shouted, “Hit it, son!”.

A cloud of dirt and dust rose up from the back of the ’33 as it fishtailed in the moonlight, and when dirt met blacktop, there was nothing but burnin’ rubber from the rear slicks and sparks a-flyin’ from the iron jail bars a dancin’ behind. They done it! But where was they off to, thought ‘ol PC. It didn’t matter none, he was out, he was free, and they wasn’t lookin’ back. It was a jail break and they done it!
