Australia's sheer size and the prohibitive cost of good roads, has always created challenges for carriers of goods and passengers. Some novel solutions appeared (Northern Territory road trains were probably the world's longest vehicles), but only upgraded roads allowed for bigger and faster vehicles to move fresh produce, passengers and urgent goods between most capital citied overnight. In these cities, the evolution of buses has been constant. Both government and private fleets have moved in design from slow noisy and barely comfortable, to the smooth air-conditioned commuter fleets of today.
