Aveling & Porter Ltd., based in Rochester, Kent, began building steam-engines in 1909 with a 3-ton "overtype" steam wagon. This wagon generated steam at 200 psi and was fitted with a compound engine with Stephenson's link motion and outside valve chests. In 1919, Aveling & Porter merged with Charles Burrel & Sons Ltd. and Richard Garret & Sons to form the Agricultural & General Engineers Combine, but this joint venture was shortlived. Afterwards, Aveling & Porter returned to Rochester and concentrated on the production of road rollers. The firm also began to develop its "Invicta" diesel engine, returning once more to petrol-powered engines. Eventually, the company merged with Barfords and became famous for construction and mining equipment.
