He competed in a variety of touring cars, one of them a 1965 Mustang imported from America and rebuilt by Norm to race specifications. The Beechey Mustang made its debut at Calder Park on the 24th January, 1965 setting a new course touring car lap record and becoming the first Mustang ever to win a circuit race anywhere in the world. One week after his big win at Calder, Beechey won again at Catalina heading the Neptune team. However, his finest win in the 1965 Mustang was the Australian Touring Car Championship at Sandown, Victoria, on 11th April, 1965 where he started at 6th row position on the grid due to technical problems but fought his way back to a triumphant win.
