The future looked good in 1994 Bathurst 1000 with With Peter Brock, teamed with Thomas Mezera driving for HRT. The race had shaped up to be an intense fight to the flag, it was unprecedented in Bathurst’s history, late in the race to have so many crews still in with a chance of winning. Running in third position, the race appeared tailor-made for Brock, being the most experienced and successful of the seven drivers on the lead lap. But he was unable to match the pace of Bowe and Lowndes ahead of him. Worse was to come, going into Castrol Curve on lap 139, Brock drifted too wide and lost control of the car, spectacularly colliding with the wall at the bottom of the hill. It seemed unthinkable that Brock had made a mistake at such a crucial stage of the race, a disastrous end, after qualifying 2nd spot on the starting grid.
