Lothar Motschenbacher was to have his finest year in the Can-Am Series in 1970. Driving his favorite car, the M8B, Lothar finished second in the season championship. The low wing was added to the M8B after high wings were banned after the 1969 season.

Lothar drove one of three McLaren M8Bs from the previous season in 1970. He had this to say about the M8B, "That was the best car that I ever drove. When we first got that car, we went out to Riverside and tested it, with the high wing and 1969 setup, and it was fantastic. I knew that I couldn't match the new car (M8D) in speed, but I always felt good if I could better the times than those the team had set the previous year with the same car."

The 1970 season would begin with tragedy for the McLaren team. Two weeks prior to the first Can-Am race Bruce McLaren died in a fatal accident during some final test laps in the new M8D built for the team to race during the 1970 Can-Am season. Bruce's death was not the only tragedy to beset the team, Denny Hulme seriously burned his hands during a test run in the new Indianapolis car at Indy Motor Speedway. However, after McLaren's tragic accident nothing, even doctors orders could keep Hulme out of the car for the first race. With the team crippled and off to a rocky start Lothar Motchenbacher and Denny Hulme dominated the 1970 championship with first and second place finishes. The M8B was just as strong as the new M8D and could hold its own against the rest of the field. Before the end of the season the entire McLaren team would transfer to the new M8D and the M8B would be no more.
