Ferruccio Lamborghini wanted to produce a sports car with innovative features, which was able to clearly distinguish itself from its competitor Ferrari. A prototype of a mid-engined transverse chassis, called 400TP, was presented in 1965. It was the basis of the Miura, launched at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show. Designed by Marcello Gandini and developed by Paolo Stanzani and Giampaolo Dallara, the Miura suddenly aged all GTs on the market at the time. Equipped with a 4-liter, 350-horsepower 12-cylinder engine mounted centrally in a transverse position (as on the 400TP prototype), the first version Miura remained in production until 1968, when the P400S was introduced, which corrected some of its youthful flaws.
