On 29th November 1948, the Holden legend was born. There was great excitement across the nation as the press spread the news that the Prime Minister, Ben Chifley, had officially launched the first Holden model off the Fisherman's Bend assembly line in Melbourne.

By modern standards, the 48-215 Holden sedan (later popularly known as the FX) seems fairly basic, but at the time it was dramatic design, offering bench seating for up to six, a powerful 6 cylinder 132.5 cubic inch displacement engine, good road clearance and a smooth ride. Initially only four door sedan models were built and offered in a choice of four colours including Gawler Cream and Cavalier Grey. After eighteen months of growing waiting lists for this sinning desing, a utility version was released which soon dominated the rural landscape.

In the fifty years since the launch of this first all Australian car, Holden have gone on to sell more cars in Australia than any other make.
