There was no thought of anything but a Monaro or Falcon taking the honours in this Hardie-Ferodo 500 when six Monaro GTS 350's took on fourteen Falcon GTHO's. The slightly faster Falcons were favoured over the Monaros where brakes were a concern.
Before even one lap was completed, a major pile up occurred forcing numerous cars out of the race. The faster Fords held the lead for some time until tyre failures slowed or stopped one Falcon after another. The Monaro drivers nursed their brakes until, at the halfway mark, the Bond/Roberts HDT Monaro led with 66 laps to its credit.
At the finish, it was a great day for the Holden Dealer Team. The Bond/Roberts car was a clear winner with the Brock/West GTS filling third place.
