Ttorrential Rain Marred the start of the 1972 hardie Ferodo Bathurst 50, a race that would eventually alter the course of Australian Motor Sport. The Holden Dealer Team prepared two GTR-XU1 LJ Torana's numbered 24C and 28C to challenger the known power of the winner in 1971. 6 hours and 130 lap, Peter Brock Grabbed his first bathurst victory in car 28C, followed by John French in car 5D.
There was drama galore in the second lap and here the Holden Dealer Team Lost its prime car 24C when Colin Bond aquaplaned across the track and rolled down the embankment. The weather, rule changes and some spectacular crashes made the 172 race one of the most memorable Bathurst events ever. It was also the end of an era as the great race would no longer be known as the '500'
