Holden's first car was designated the 48/215 and, although adapted from an American design, was built almost entirely in Australia. Advanced features included a unitary construction body, power came from a 129 ci (2.15 litre) engine driving through a three-speed manual gearbox. The 45kw 'Grey' engine (named after the colour of the block) proved to be sturdy and reliable. Buyers claimed 80mph (128kph) and 30mpg (9.5L/100km) and exceptional performance on the rough and dusty Australian roads. As word spread, demand exceeded production.
