Manufactured in Czechoslovakia, the Hetzer was designed to be a low-cost light tank destroyer that could stand up to the rigors of battle on any front. Entering service in July 1944, the Hetzer used a wide range of existing components from the outclassed PzKpfw 38(t) tank. Although the Hetzer employed a wider hull and sloped armour, its cramped fighting compartment and limited angle of fire presented many problems to its crew. The Hetzer also featured a roof-mounted remote-controlled machine gun for
close combat support.
