If any motor car could justifiably claim the title 'Everyman's Car', surely it would have to be the Ford Escort. For over twenty-three years the Escort has been all things to all men, fulfilling every conceivable function in a multitude of models, from the trader's van to the enthusiast's hot-hatch.

And for every niche filled as a mode of transport, there has been a parallel existence in the world of competition.

Escort chronicles in the minutest detail the gestation, production and development of this quite remarkably successful car. It takes a detailed look at every aspect of the Escort's existence from the introduction of the 'Anglia replacement' in early 1968, through the advent of the Mk2 to the first of the front-wheel-drive models, the MK3.

Now, in this second edition, Jeremy Walton has revised the text to include the update to Escort 'Mk4' specification. The Mk4 generation has proved equal in stature to its illustrious Escort forebears, and now takes its proper place in the annals of motoring history, succeeded by the 'Mk5' which was introduced as this edition went to press in autumn 1990. As before no aspect of the car's private life is left unobserved, from conception to launch, modification and advertising, competition and specifications.

The new text is accompanied by the addition of seventy-five new photographs bringing the total to over 425.
