Two years before Henry Ford's revolutionary production line was in place, considerable hand workmanship was still needed to build the legendary Model T. On average, it took seven times longer to make a Tin Lizzie in 1911 as it did a few years later when Ford's method of mass production was in full swing. Besides being handcrafted with considerable care, the 1911 Model T also ushered in an entirely new design-featuring a new body, fenders, wheels, engine and axles. Depending on the particular model, the car cost between $680.00 and $1,100, and no options were available. Yet, for its day, the 1911 Model T was an advanced automobile with its planetary transmission, multiple disk clutch, torque tube drive and three pedal controls with one lever on the floor. But the most distinguishing characteristic of the fastest selling car of its era was its sheer simplicity, as typified by Ford's statement: "You can have any colour you like-so long as it's black."
