The Maxwell automobile came about because Benjamin Briscoe was convinced that the car he helped finance would never amount to anything. Ironically, that automobile was the Buick and only ardent car enthusiasts have ever yeard of the Maxwell. Nonetheless, Briscoe's partner, Jonathan Maxwell, designed cars that delivered great value for money. One of the most impressive was the 1911 Maxwell Roadster, featuring a four-cylinder engine and surprising performance. Designed with considerable charm and flare, this car was easily recognizable with its levers outside the driver's door, its black top with two windows in the rear and the spare tire positioned just behind the gas reservoir on the back.
